Frankfurt, 13 June 2025 – The European Parliament is discussing amendments to the Omnibus Package. VDMA Executive Director Thilo Brodtmann comments:

  • “Now it is important for the EU to stay on course towards the Omnibus Package! The amendments proposed by the lead MEP, Warborn, on sustainability reporting, in particular with regard to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D), are a step in the right direction.”
  • "It is particularly beneficial for European companies to approach the CS3D due diligence obligations on a risk-based basis and to limit them to direct business partners. This creates legal certainty without overburdening companies with unrealistic expectations.”
  • “The focus on risks that can actually be controlled, e.g. geographical and contextual risk factors such as the extent of law enforcement, is practical and crucial. This makes it clear that European suppliers do not need to be checked in terms of due diligence. This is very close to the “white list” that we have always called for!”
  • “The numerous amendments proposed by the other committees involved in the European Parliament are a cause for serious concern. They could dilute the good, balanced work done so far and unnecessarily complicate the objectives. The motto here should be: less is more!”

The VDMA represents 3600 German and European mechanical and plant engineering companies. The industry stands for innovation, export orientation and SMEs. The companies employ around 3 million people in the EU-27, more than 1.2 million of them in Germany alone. This makes mechanical and plant engineering the largest employer among the capital goods industries, both in the EU-27 and in Germany. In the European Union, it represents a turnover volume of an estimated 870 billion euros. Around 80 percent of the machinery sold in the EU comes from a manufacturing plant in the domestic market.
