Good news for multilateralism! After six years of discussions on hold, European and South African leaders will meet on 13 March, for the eighth EU-South Africa summit*. 

This meeting could not be timelier. In a world increasingly polarised and divided by nationalism, hard power and trade conflicts, it is high time to reinforce ties with a region that not only remains a crucial partner for the European Union and vice versa, but that also plays a central role in the current global order. 

According to the Socialists and Democrats, this is a unique opportunity to lay the foundation to advance the green transition, enhance value chains and boost efforts across both regions.  

The S&D Group has requested a debate during the April plenary session to follow up on the outcome of the summit.

Udo Bullmann, S&D DEVE coordinator, said: 

“In turbulent times, while the world is burning, the partnership of South Africa and the EU is a beacon of hope. Two like-minded global actors working for peace, solidarity and a sustainable future for all - our collaboration is of utmost benefit, bilaterally as well as for a just and reliable global order.

“The S&D Group remains committed to a multilateralism that is based on trust and equal partnership. As we witness a global trend that looks the other way in the face of inequalities and climate change, we call on the Presidents of the Commission and Council to take this opportunity to reinforce the politics of the people, international law and a rules-based multilateralism. 

“Inter-parliamentary cooperation will be crucial to strengthening ties between the two regions and we call on EU leaders to ensure this is reflected in the joint declaration that will be adopted at the end of the Summit. The European Parliament has played a vital role in the preparation of this summit. Through its EP inter-parliamentary mission in February 2025, it contributed to reinforce our commitment to strengthening the engagement between the South African and European Parliament. 

“The S&D Group is committed to intensifying our dialogue with South African civil society and parliamentarians, and to ensure that this partnership serves the interests of our people. We stand ready to foster close ties with South Africa, ensuring that both regions work together for a better future.”
