This week, an S&D delegation led by our president, Iratxe García Perez, traveled to Egypt, Palestine, Israel and Lebanon to engage with local activists and leaders dedicated to fostering dialogue and building lasting peace in the region.

During their mission, they witnessed first-hand the pain and suffering experienced by so many, yet they were also deeply moved by the resilience and solidarity that continue to inspire hope amid despair.

The S&D Group remains the only political force capable of engaging with all sides of the conflict. Its unwavering commitment to a two-state solution is the only path toward a just and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

Iratxe García, S&D Group leader, said:

“We met with representatives and actors – leaders from all over the region, humanitarian workers, educators, peace advocates – who are on the front lines of this crisis. Their courage and determination show that even in the darkest times, there is still hope. Europe cannot turn its back on them. We must stand firm in supporting those working towards peace and justice.

“The road to peace is long and difficult, but we cannot give up. The international community, and Europe in particular, has a duty to stand by those fighting for justice and human rights. Only through dialogue, mutual understanding, and a firm commitment to a two-state solution can we achieve lasting peace and security in the region.”

Key highlights of the Delegation's visit:

Rafah, Egypt: The S&D delegation acknowledged Egypt’s pivotal role in facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza and emphasized the necessity of sustained international support to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Nova Festival Site, Israel: They honoured the memory of the victims of the October 7 terrorist attack and reiterated our urgent call for the immediate release of all hostages.

West Bank: The delegation observed the continuous expansion of illegal Israeli settlements and reaffirmed our unequivocal stance against the occupation. We stress that a two-state solution remains fundamental to achieving just and lasting peace.

Ramallah, Palestine: During their visit to an UNRWA school, they witnessed the critical contributions of the agency in providing education and humanitarian assistance. We call for unwavering support for UNRWA and strongly oppose any attempts to undermine its vital work.

Lebanon: The delegation recognised and commended the invaluable efforts of civil society organisations in fostering stability and democratic governance. We remain confident that Lebanon has the potential to emerge as a stable and democratic state.
