The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament will vote in favour of an EU legislation that will achieve better connectivity of energy infrastructure among member states. According to them, the Trans-European energy infrastructure Regulation, known also as TEN-E, will further strengthen sustainability of the EU energy grids.

Erik Bergkvist, MEP and S&D negotiator on TEN-E, said:

“Europe is becoming colder in all senses of the word. The horrendous war against Ukraine confronts us with a bitter chill, and the energy crisis challenges Europe with yet another type of cold. Our group wants to find a way out of it, including by making our access to energy better, more green and more sustainable. We can only do this if we stay firm on ending the use of fossil fuels.

“Our group is proud we succeeded in ensuring no projects with fossil gas will be included in the next list of the Projects of Common Interest (PCIs), which constitutes the core of the TEN-E. The Projects of Common Interest are key infrastructure projects aimed at completing the European internal energy market in order to help the EU achieve its energy and climate policy objectives: delivering affordable, secure and sustainable energy for all Europeans and contributing to a climate-neutral economy by 2050.

“I am convinced the TEN-E creates a greener and warmer Europe. We, the Socialists and Democrats are convinced that this is the way to show to our citizens the EU keeps its promises and can guarantee a better future for us all in times of worldwide uncertainty.”
