The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the measures by the European Commission to decarbonise buildings, support measures in favour of renewables and low carbon gases and to reduce methane emissions. This comes after earlier today, the Commission adopted a set of legislative proposals to decarbonise the EU gas market and to ensure energy security throughout the European Union.

Mohammed Chahim MEP, S&D vice-president responsible for the energy aspects of the Green Deal, said:

"Until now, European Member States had to fend for themselves in order to resist the soaring energy prices. With subsidies and tax breaks, we tried to keep energy bills down. With this Commission proposal though, we can really stand together against these high energy prices. It is therefore a welcome addition to our toolbox of instruments to combat soaring energy prices. Although the ultimate remedy would of course be a successful energy transition, away from fossil-based energy sources."

Dan Nica MEP, S&D spokesperson in the European Parliament’s committee on industry, research and energy, said:

“The new energy package comes at a crucial time as we urgently need to reverse the energy prices hike, to end energy poverty while also adapting our infrastructures on the pathway towards climate neutrality. For that purpose, a broad range of consistent measures are needed, which also reflect the wide set of proposals that the Commission delivered today. Buildings have to be adequately equipped and energy-efficient to keep people warm and to be in line with the energy transition. At the same time, we need climate proof methane infrastructures that prevent harmful leaks. Last, but not least - common efforts at the EU level are needed to ensure the security of supply and to drive down energy prices. As always, the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament will make sure that the social dimension is properly integrated in the package”.
