The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament advocate rules and standards in international trade and multilateral agreements to ensure that populations benefit from global trade. This is why in the EU negotiations with Mexico, they demanded the adoption of the International Labour Organisations (ILO) convention on worker unions’ freedoms and the right to collective bargaining.
This is why the S&Ds welcome the ratification of a new law by the Mexican Senate adopting such ILO convention.
The S&D spokesperson on trade, Alessia Mosca MEP, said:
"We welcome the ratification by the Mexican government of the ILO Convention 98 on the right to organization and collective bargaining. This shows on one side the seriousness of both the EU and Mexican negotiators and on the other side the clear appeal of the EU as a trading partner.
"Thanks also to the efforts of the S&D rapporteur we are now one step closer to the ratification of a deal that can have an enormous potential both for European producers and consumers. Meanwhile, we will continue monitoring the correct implementation of Convention 98 and we call on the new Mexican government to continue working in order to solve the remaining critical issues".
S&D MEP Inmaculada Rodríguez Piñero, who is the author of the parliamentary report to update trade relations between the EU and Mexico, said:
"The decision to ratify the ILO Convention is excellent news for the Mexican people, for Mexican workers and business people, who will benefit from a more stable, fair and sustainable economy.
"With this step, Mexico shows again the values we share, defending multilateralism and a world economic governance based on the promotion of social justice and labour rights internationally recognised."
