Brussels, 24 March 2017 – Cefic - the EU chemical industry association - celebrates a historic milestone tomorrow in the journey of the European Union with the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.
It comes at a time when lawmakers are considering how to shape a strong union for another 60 years of success. With this in mind, Cefic Director General Marco Mensink and President Hariolf Kottmann (CEO, Clariant) publish an open letter to Juncker’s Commission, asking to shore up the Union in four key areas:
- Give a clear answer to citizens’ concerns and showcase why Europe is important to citizens
- Maintain the internal market and ensures its rules and standards are applied by all countries
- Foster a European industrial renaissance, creating new opportunities for young people
- Defend the free movement of goods through international trade
Said Marco Mensink, Cefic Director General, “We congratulate Europe’s leaders for defending high social values and promoting solidarity amongst our diverse member states. A strong Europe and a strong European chemical industry go hand in hand. On the 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaty, we want to underline our commitment to Europe. Our companies will continue to innovate solutions for consumer demand, climate, energy and scarce resources, creating new well-qualified jobs.”
Over these decades, EU chemical manufacturers have been instrumental in answering society’s demand for smart, high-tech products. As an industry, the chemicals sector is at the core of value chains offering solutions to major societal challenges such as climate change, energy security and improving health and welfare amongst others, providing millions of highly-skilled jobs and bringing economic value to Europe.
