The S&D Group has voiced concerns about changes to the criminal code in Latvia, which some are worried could be used to restrict freedom of expression.

S&D Group Vice-President Tanja Fajon said:

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental right for all Europeans. The ability to criticise government actions or policies without fear of prosecution is the foundation of all modern European democracies. We need to be sure that these latest changes to the criminal code in Latvia don’t place disproportionate restrictions on non-violent political expression. We therefore call on the government to consult the Venice Commission over the amendments. This would provide a greater level of clarity and ensure that Latvia is living up to its commitments to protect fundamental freedoms.”
