Dialogue on Horizon 2020 highlights how standardization supports research and innovation in the EU

Brussels, 28 February 2012 - European standards organisations are actively contributing to the debate on the proposal for a future EU programme on research and innovation, Horizon 2020. They are engaging in dialogue with the EU institutions in order to highlight how standardization provides a bridge between research, innovation and the market, thereby strengthening competitiveness and boosting growth and jobs.

European Parliament supports action to boost carbon price

Today more pressure was put on the EU to raise the carbon price under the Emissions Trading System (ETS) - the EU's main tool for reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions.

ALDE Urges ACTA Parties to clarify whether or not it is binding on signatories

On a visit to Washington, the Presidency of the Liberal and Democrat Group in the European Parliament met with US Senator Ron Wyden, chair of the Trade Sub-Committee, to discuss the controversial intellectual property agreement ACTA. During the meeting, the Senator discussed his efforts to establish whether ACTA will be a binding international agreement in the United States or not.

Energy efficiency - EP vote for stronger, binding rules a boost for EU economic and energy goals

The European Parliament energy committee (ITRE) today voted on new EU legislation on energy efficiency and savings (1). The committee approved proposals by Green draftsperson/rapporteur Claude Turmes to strengthen the legislative draft, including binding targets and binding measures, with a view to ensuring the EU realises its target of reducing energy consumption 20% by 2020. After the vote, the EP rapporteur/draftsperson, Green MEP Claude Turmes said:

Winter Emergency response activities shape up in Eastern and South Eastern Europe

Brussels, 27 February 2012 - Caritas organisations in Eastern and South Eastern Europe have started immediately relief operations to address the suffering of populations in their countries.

One particular example is that Caritas organizations from seven countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia) have joined forces with Caritas Europa in developing a single consolidated project proposal for their response activities.

ABS for Motorcycles: FIA disappointed with flawed cost-benefit analysis

The FIA, representing among its membership 8 million motorcyclists, is disappointed that the European Parliament cost-benefit analysis on the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) for motorcycles uses an inflated price for ABS, based solely on manufacturers’ figures, leading to a flawed analysis. The report will be presented to the IMCO committee tomorrow (28 February 2012).

IRU addresses increasing liabilities for road transport operators

External borders - Court ruling on odious Italy-Libya deal has clear implications for EU migration and border policies

The European Court of Human Rights today ruled that Italy violated the rights of migrants by sending them back to Libya under the terms of a bilateral agreement in 2009.
