Three years after its inauguration -Eastern Partnership, the initiative of Poland and Sweden,  seems to have arrived to a breaking point. On the one hand, the attention of the European Union is focused on the debt crisis in the euro-zone and the foreign policy is concentrated on the revolutionary transformations in North Africa. On the other hand, the experiences from Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, where civil societies and democratic forces are still forming after the collapse of dictatorships, showed that the EU must support democratic values.

European e-Skills Week 2012 Takes Flight

Brussels, Monday 19 March 2012:  European e-Skills Week 2012– backed by the European Commission launches today in Brussels. 

Vice President of the European Commission, responsible for Enterprise and Industry, Antonio Tajani, is officially marking the start of the European e-Skills Week 2012, by welcoming,  together with conference host, Anna Maria Darmanin, Vice-President of the European Economic and Social Committee,  more than 200 delegates from thirty member states.

The transparency of the accounts of investment entities will be improved if proposals to amend the way they present their investments are adopted. However more work needs to be done to make the new rules easier to understand and implement, says ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

Liberals launch proposals to increase transparency of MEP votes

On Monday 19th March the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament will discuss a proposal by Andrew Duff MEP (Lib Dem, UK) to open up law making to greater public scrutiny.
Mr Duff proposes that all final votes on draft laws even in Parliament's powerful committees should be by roll call. He argues:

European Parliament calls for binding 2030 renewables target

The European Parliament voted today for the first time in favour of setting a binding renewable energy target for 2030.

"The Parliament's vote sends a strong message to the European Council as it prepares its response to the European Commission's Energy Roadmap 2050", commented Stephane Bourgeois, Head of Regulatory Affairs at the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).
