Call to the EU to inform European citizens about their new agenda setting right

The ECAS/Democracy International conference ‘European Citizens’ Initiatives : On the Starting Line’ 20 March was attended by 200 people from civil society organisations. The Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee of the European Parliament (IMCO) today adopted a Legislative Report on the revision of the present regulatory framework for European Standardisation.

ANEC welcomes the adoption of the Report and its measures to strengthen the voice of consumers in the European Standardisation System.

Violent suppression of Kurdish Newroz festivities condemned

Despite a ban by the Turkish authorities forbidding the Kurds to celebrate Newroz (Spring Festival), on March 18, thousands of people gathered on the streets in many cities including Istanbul. Over one million people celebrated in Diyarbakir alone.

Save water with wind power

The power sector is the one of the world's biggest consumers of water, but one source - wind power - uses very little water to produce electricity.  All fossil fuels and nuclear need significant quantities of water to pump crude oil out of the ground, remove pollutants from power plant exhausts, flush residues after fossil fuels are burned and cool power plants.

Wervel reminds European Parliament of protein deficit

The proposal of the European Commission to reform the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) unfortunately left the problem of the European protein deficit totally unaddressed. Wervel therefore took the initiative to remind the European Parliament (EP) of their resolution of February 2011 in which they raised the problem. Together with a symbolic bag of local peas, a letter was handed over to the members and chairman of the agriculture committee in the EP.

EuroCommerce elects Lucy Neville-Rolfe as its new President

EuroCommerce is delighted to announce the appointment of Lucy Neville-Rolfe as its new President, following her election at the EuroCommerce General Assembly today. Lucy will take up her three-year mandate on 1 July.

CEEP at EP Hearing on the award of concession contracts: “We need to re-think the architecture of the proposal”

“The members of CEEP are still looking for a good reason why such a detailed and complex legislative initiative on concessions was published”, said today Rainer Plassmann, chair of CEEP SGI committee intervening at the EP Hearing on the award of concessions contracts. “However, they decided to work very closely with Members of the European Parliament to ensure that legislation will finally best respond to the needs of public services providers, which means at the end the needs of citizens”.

FoodDrinkEurope welcomes European Parliament’s ENVI Committee vote on health claims

(Brussels, 21 March 2012) European food manufacturers welcome the European Parliament ENVI Committee’s rejection of the objection tabled against the list of permitted Article 13 health claims today. Following a lengthy and complex process, this is an important step towards the adoption of 222 scientifically substantiated and permitted Article 13.1 generic health claims on foods as laid down by Regulation 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims.

Signature of cooperation framework between the European Defence Agency (EDA) and Switzerland

Brussels – Switzerland and the European Defence Agency (EDA) want to coop-erate in the armaments sector. A corresponding cooperation framework was signed in Brussels today. The framework without legal commitment enables Switzerland to recognise armaments policy developments at an early stage, and to access multilateral armaments cooperation in Europe. Switzerland is free to decide what information it wants to exchange with the EDA and in what projects and programs it wishes to participate.
