EIM welcomes Council Conclusions on Multi-Annual Contracts

EIM, the association of European Rail Infrastructure Managers, welcomes the conclusions adopted last Friday by the Transport Council which encourage EU Member
States to adopt Multi-Annual Contracts with rail infrastructure managers. EIM believes such contracts are vital for ensuring the long term stability of rail infrastructure managers, allowing efficient planning for investment, maintenance and renewal of the
network, as well as driving forward improved quality of service for customers. However EIM is disappointed by the Council’s decision not to make such contracts mandatory.

The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Wilfried Martens, expressed this afternoon his disappointment with the negative result of the Irish referendum to approve the Lisbon Treaty.

“I respect the result, but I am very disappointed because it seems that most Irish citizens were poorly informed about the content of the Treaty and its importance for Ireland and Europe,” said the EPP President.

Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament has expressed his disappointment at the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty in the Irish referendum.

Results of the vote announced this morning indicate that the final outcome will be negative.

Speaking today Mr Daul said: "While I am disappointed with the "No" vote in Ireland we must accept the decision of the Irish voters, and deal with the consequences. The Irish Government will have to give the reasons for this defeat at the European Council next week.
