The earthquake which has struck Haiti is a test for the capacity of Europe to act outside its borders. Nonetheless this catastrophe has seen a humanitarian response based on a national level. Each Member State is sending its own personnel, its own sniffer dogs, planes etc. This tragedy confronts us once again with the lack of European coordination in the face of humanitarian crises.

Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE group leader in the European Parliament reacted to Bulgarian PM Borisov's misplaced remarks in the Bulgarian media concerning his ALDE colleagues and their scrutiny of Bulgarian commissioner designate, Rumiana Jeleva.

"It is totally unacceptable for a Prime Minister to hit out with such sharp language at MEPs who are simply doing their job of scrutinising the candidates for the new EU executive. The European Parliament would be doing a disservice to those who elected them if we failed to take our responsibilities seriously.

CEEMET, the Council of European Employers of the Metal, Engineering and Technology-based Industries (MET) and the EMF, the European Metalworkers’ Federation, have today launched their Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee for the MET industries with the formal recognition of the European Commission.
