Europe’s network operators outline key priorities for pursuing the European Digital Agenda

BRUSSELS – ETNO welcomes the importance given to high-speed broadband networks and services in the EU 2020 Strategy as key drivers of growth, innovation and welfare. MEPs from delegation to Gaza meet with President Buzek

Six MEPs who participated recently in the largest delegation* of European parliamentarians to visit Gaza met this morning in the name of that delegation with Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, accompanied by Mazen Kahel and Arafat Shoukri, Chair of the European Campaign to End the siege of Gaza, an umbrella organisation of 30 NGOs across Europe.

MEPs present at the meeting were Roberto Goebbels, Alexandra Thein, Bairbre de Brún Malika Benarab-Attou, Nessa Childers and  Helmut Scholz.

Strong European Framework for inclusion of Roma needed

In a debate on the Roma minority taking place ahead of the second European Roma summit Cornelia Ernst (GUE/NGL, Germany) told MEPs that existing EU directives are not sufficient to protect the Roma in the EU from discrimination and do not help them to integrate in a long term. 

"What we need is a European Roma Strategy" she said "which is part of all policies and includes effective measures to combat direct and indirect discrimination against Roma. 

A long overdue acceptance of Israel's violations of international law

Following the European Parliament's approval of a resolution on the Goldstone report on the war on Gaza, GUE/NGL MEP Kyriacos Triantaphyllides welcomed Parliament's acknowledgment of Israeli violations of international law.

"The approval of the joint resolution on the implementation of the Goldstone report signals the impact of the report on the Middle East Peace Process. For the first time, a resolution voted in the European Parliament acknowledges Israeli's violations of international humanitarian law" he said.

Welcome to democracy - Parliament rejects Commission's shifty negotiating methods

With an impressive vote of 633 votes in favour and 13 votes against, the European Parliament today rejected the backroom manner by which the Commission has been negotiating the ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) "without legal base and without any parliamentary approval...for a mandate".

EU governments' backward steps on Kurdish question

In recent weeks the Belgian, Italian and French authorities have carried out raids on Kurdish journalists working for the broadcaster Roj TV and political activists for the newly founded Peace and Democracy Party (BDP). 

In a press conference held today, GUE/NGL MEP Jürgen Klute expressed his outrage at recent acts of repression committed by EU governments against Kurdish journalists and political activists.

GUE/NGL demands cancellation of illegal EU-Morocco fisheries agreement

GUE-NGL MEPs João Ferreira and Willy Meyer have put a question to the Commission demanding the suspension and revision of the EU-Morocco fisheries agreement on grounds that it is illegal.
