EU Athletes & European betting industry launch educational campaign to support integrity in sports

The European betting industry has joined forces with EU Athletes to launch an educational campaign aimed at helping professional sportspeople better understand and deal with issues surrounding the integrity of sport and betting.

The new education campaign for athletes will consist of a code of conduct, jointly developed by EU Athletes, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) and the European Sports Security Association (ESSA), and be supported by face-to-face presentations and online resources dedicated to providing ongoing support.

RE-thinking 2050: Making the EU 100% renewables-based

The European Renewable Energy Council (EREC), outlines in its new report RE-thinking 2050 a pathway how the European Union can switch to a 100% renewable energy supply for electricity, heating and cooling as well as transport, examining the effects on Europe’s energy supply system and on CO2 emissions. 

Guy Verhofstadt: "Recent declarations on the paedophile crisis are unacceptable"

Today Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the ALDE Group, has sent a letter to the Presidents of the European Commission, the European Council and the Parliament asking them to react to the declarations of Cardinal Bertone and others on the current paedophile crisis. ALDE Group members will seek to raise the matter via an oral question on the subject at a forthcoming plenary session. 

On the initiative of the ALDE group leader, Guy Verhofstadt, Parliament's economic and monetary affairs committee today will hold a hearing on the subject of "The fiscal crisis in the European Union - lessons from Greece. Economic surveillance, statistics, off-balance sheet operations and sovereign debt"

"EU silence on the continuous flouting of human rights by Morocco in its illegal occupation of Western Sahara is exacerbating the trauma being suffered by the Saharawi people" Aminetu Haidar told the GUE/NGL Study Days meeting today in Madrid.

GUE/NGL backs demonstration against postal services liberalization

A delegation  from the GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament will take part in tomorrow's demonstration in Brussels against the liberalization of postal services in Europe.

 The demonstration begins at 2pm on Place Luxembourg, and the march will proceed through the EU district returning at 4pm to Place Luxembourg. The third European Postal Services Directive was adopted in February 2008 by the European Parliament with the completion of the liberalization of the postal market set for 31 December 2010.

Results demonstrate EFPIA anti-counterfeit product verification pilot project successful

Brussels, 14 April 2010 - EFPIA, the voice of the research-based pharmaceutical industry in Europe, today published the results of their product verification system pilot project. The pilot, held in Sweden between September 2009 and January 2010, successfully demonstrated that a product verification system at the point of dispense, based on a two-dimensional data matrix, is both robust and effective.
