Citizens deserve better - EU budget transparency standards just not good enough

Defending citizens' right to information on how their tax money is being spent today in the European Parliament debate on the EU budget, Danish GUE/NGL MEP Søren Søndergaard said MEPs have the responsibility to reject EU institution accounting practices until levels of transparency are improved.

Commission Work Programme 2010 - inaction veiled in rhetoric

Reacting to Barroso's presentation of the Commission’s work programme to Parliament, Portuguese GUE/NGL MEP Miguel Portas said the title of the programme document "Time to Act" was evidence of an effort to hide indolence behind a mountain of words.

"Now is the time to act?! Why hasn't the Commission acted already?" Portas demanded, going on to point out the gap between Commission rhetoric and policy.

Air transport chaos presents an opportunity to strengthen European coordination.

The disruption of air traffic across Europe has naturally been the focus of an extraordinary debate in the European Parliament today with the Council and the Commission. Apart from the changes forced upon Parliament's own agenda as a result of the absence of a number of MEPs, the main concern was for the desperate plight of thousands of citizens stranded abroad for several days and that of airlines facing bankruptcy unless flights resume soon.

Enel has finalized the acquisition of exploration licences and gas assets in northern Italy from the canadian company Stratic

This acquisition has been carried out for a cash consideration of 33 million euros

The assets include 0.7 billion cubic metres of reserves in the Longanesi gas field in Emilia Romagna.

Enel signs a 5 year revolving credit facility for 10 billion euros

Luxembourg, April 19, 2010 – Today in Luxembourg Enel S.p.A. (th1) signed a 5-year revolving credit facility for 10 billion euros that replaces a 5 billion euros syndicated loan (currently not utilised) set to expire in November 2010.

Passenger safety must come before profit - Bisky on air travel disruption

Welcoming the decision by European aviation security authorities not to put passenger's safety at risk, GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky added today in the European Parliament debate on the ongoing disruption of air traffic in Europe that it was "irresponsible for airlines to allow pilots to fly 'at their own risk'". Competition and profit seeking must not take precedence over the security of passengers, he said.

The Second ‘European Union in International Affairs Conference’

After the successful first conference in 2008, the Second ‘European Union in International Affairs’ takes place this week in Brussels. More than 150 researchers and policymakers from approximately 30 different countries will come together to discuss and exchange ideas in understanding the interface of EU and international politics and law. Keynote speeches will be given by European Commission President José Manuel Barosso, European Commissioner Karel de Gucht and the Director of Cabinet for the Belgian Secretary of State for European Affairs, Ambassador François Roux.

CIAA publishes its ‘Data & trends of the European Food and Drink Industry 2009’

(Brussels, 19 April 2010)  The Confederation of food and drink industries of the EU today released its annual facts and figures brochure for 2009 - “Data & trends for the European Food and Drink Industry”.

Among the most notable findings are:

o        The EU is the largest exporter and importer in food and drink products worldwide, with a trade surplus of €1.1 billion in 2008;

IRU calls for greater Road Transport Security
