EP rejects dangerous Commission proposal on working time for truckers

Welcoming the European Parliament vote on the Bauer report on working time for road transport workers, Portuguese GUE/NGL MEP Ilda Figueiredo said the Commission's proposals would have undermined safety on European roads and was based on the false assumption that allowing self-employed truckers to work up to 86 hours per week would not have a negative impact on road safety.

Vote result: 368 in favour of rejection of the Commission proposal, 301 against, 8 abstentions

Credit Rating Agencies - Commissioner Barnier must cease unacceptable deference to "mafia of speculators

Denouncing the Commission's refusal to confront the problems created by the credit rating agencies (CRAs) that have fuelled a "mafia of speculators" during this crisis, Greek GUE/NGL MEP Nikos Chountis today called for the work of the agencies to be undertaken by a public and democratically controlled institution.

Parliament's adopts positive but improvable position on Millennium Development Goals

 Reacting to Parliament's adoption of a report on the Millennium Development Goals, GUE/NGL German MEP Gabi Zimmer said that "with the approval of the Cashman report, we send a strong signal to EU Member States that they cannot relinquish their responsibilities in the fight against poverty and hunger" adding that while the report contains positive and realistic demands it "does not go far enough".
