Chemical Industry aims to meet 30 November REACH deadline

Cooperation with key stakeholders working well, learning process continues

The European chemical sector is putting the final pieces in place to meet the upcoming 30 November REACH chemicals registration deadline, industry leaders said today at a high-level press briefing at European Commission headquarters in Brussels.

Chemical industry executives joined EU Commissioners for Environment and Enterprise along with the head of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to give an update to reporters on the much anticipated REACH deadline.

Internalisation of external costs can place a 414 billion euro burden on the EU economy per year, while profiting only two EU countries

A new ProgTrans study concludes that only two Member States will benefit from extra wealth and national income from the internalisation of external costs whereas most EU Member States will end up paying much more than they will receive. Road charges, when including excessive external costs, can reach up to 436 billion Euros per year, yet without generating any effective action aimed at removing the externalities by earmarking the charges to effectively reduce road transport’s environmental impact.

The European Parliament today adopted a resolution on the situation of Roma in the European Union, which explicitly condemns the announcements and decisions of Nicolas Sarkozy and the French government, which is seeking to stigmatize a cultural minority.

The xenophobic statements of the French President are not out of the blue, they came in a difficult political, financial and social context for Nicolas Sarkozy and his government. This populism has horrendously exploited a population for electoral purposes.

ECJ: Austrian gaming legislation contrary to EU law

In a decision published today (1) , the European Court of Justice ruled that the Austrian laws regulating the provision of gaming services are disproportionate and discriminatory and therefore not compliant with EU law.

Only a day after the landmark rulings issued against the German lottery and sports betting monopoly the ECJ out rightly rejects the Austrian gaming provisions as also being in clear breach of EU law.
