EU Vote Spells Progress for Patients and Coordinated Health Technology Assessment (HTA)

EuropaBio welcomed yesterday’s landmark vote in the European Parliament in favour of the EU Cross-border Healthcare Directive.

The adoption of the Directive represents an important milestone on the journey towards enabling patients to receive medical treatment regardless of their country of residence in the EU. In addition, the Directive creates a sound legal basis upon which crucial cooperation on Health Technology Assessment in the member states can be built.

European Doctors welcome the 2nd reading approval of the Directive for the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare by the European Parliament today which is now only awaiting its formal adoption by the Council of Ministers. This legislation presents a crucial step in codifying and clarifying patients’ rights by addressing the issues of reimbursement of cross-border healthcare, the restrictions to the need for its prior authorisation, the role of eHealth tools and Health Technology Assessment as well as options for patients affected by rare diseases.

 After the European Parliament vote on the resolution on the situation in Haiti, one year after the earthquake, GUE/NGL MEP Jacky Hénin (France) made the following statement:

"Most of my group decided to abstain because the events taking place in Haiti are a clear illustration of the limitations of current workings of the UN. In Haiti, humanitarian intervention is showing its incapacity to put sustainable solutions in place for the Haitian people.

Europe should step up research and funding to combat suffering from Alzheimer´s

The European Parliament adopted today a report on a "European initiative on Alzheimer´s disease and other dementias" which calls for concerted action not only in promoting awareness but also the need for public policies and concrete responses to this disability.

The main objective of the report is to give more serious recognition of the disease and its wide implications for families, carers and society at large. The report highlights the need to better ensure the quality of life through early and accurate diagnosis and thus reduce the number of people suffering.ries90.jpg

"The Euro is an essential pillar of the European construction and everything will be done to stabilise and strengthen it. This said, no-one is unaware of the seriousness of the situation that Europe is witnessing. That is why everything must be done in 2011 to restore market confidence, not in a superficial way but structurally - ie. by creating conditions for growth and employment in the long term," highlighted Joseph Daul in a debate on the Euro with Herman Van Rompuy.
