European Parliament's INTA committee cements improvements to safeguard regulation

Brussels, 27 January 2011 – The European automobile industry welcomes the vote, yesterday, by the INTA Committee of the European Parliament in favour of the amended safeguard regulation accompanying the free trade agreement (FTA) with South Korea. “The Committee has recognised the legitimate concerns of our industry and ensured important improvements to the safeguard regulation“, said Ivan Hodac, Secretary General of the automotive trade association ACEA.

EU energy policy - New study highlights 'defining moment' for EU energy and climate future

EU heads of state and government are set to discuss Europe's energy future at next week's 'energy summit' (4 February). Ahead of the summit, the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament today launched the 'Vision Scenario', an independent study by Öko-Institut, setting out a detailed energy scenario for Europe up to 2050 (1). The study represents the first detailed scenario that sets out how the EU can meet the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80-95% by 2050 (from 1990 levels), with a comprehensive sector by sector analysis.

"It is essential that we protect the democratic prerogatives of the European Parliament as foreseen by the Lisbon Treaty. As co-legislator, we must be able to control, on an equal footing with the Council, the adoption and the execution of strategic decisions on the spending of development aid", Gay Mitchell MEP said after the Development Committee unanimously agreed to amend financing instruments for Development Cooperation.

Brussels, 27th January 2011.- Today the independent agricultural think-tank and
Research Centre OPERA* presented Risk Indicator selection and Quantitative Targets, an extensive and comprehensive compilation of pragmatic implementation guidelines recommended by OPERA to measure the progress of the sustainable use of pesticides in agriculture. The report aims to support national authorities in transposing the European Sustainable Use Directive, and in elaborating their national actions plans for the implementation of the said Directive that recently entered into force.

Global economic recovery is slipping away, say accountants

The global economic recovery, which has been slowing down in the past few months, has now gone into reverse, according to a worldwide survey of finance professionals by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

The results of ACCA’s Global Economic Conditions survey for the fourth quarter of 2010, show that twice the number of accountants as compared with the previous quarter (28% as opposed to 14%) believe that the recovery is slipping away.
