Happy European Youth Day to all COST Early Stage Researchers!

On 31 January 2011, European Youth Day, COST would like to celebrate Europe’s young researchers

 

Just like their peers in other professions, young European scientists are facing difficult times when trying to establish their careers. The EU has made youth issues one of its priorities as part of the EU 2020 Strategy, in the form of the Youth on the Move initiative. The European Youth Day is a timely appointment to cast light on youth issues and to start a debate on how to guarantee a bright future for them.

Egypt: The European Union should show support for the democracy movement

Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament condemned the violent crackdown on Egyptians venting their frustration at decades of repression and lack of political freedom:
"Egyptians have found their collective voice and are calling for an end to the dictatorship following the recent protests in Tunisia which ended the authoritarian rule of Ben Ali.  In both cases, beating or killing those demonstrating for their liberty and democracy will only strengthen their perseverance.

European Council: No concrete proposals to address attacks on Christians. Elmar Brok MEP and Mario Mauro MEP

Mario Mauro and Elmar Brok, promoters in the European Parliament of the Resolution on attacks against Christian communities, are astonished that the draft document released by the Council on intolerance, discrimination and violence on the basis of religion or belief  "never even mentions Christians".

 

Furthermore, they "are astonished that the Council document fails to take in consideration any of the proposals made by the European Parliament through its Resolution approved with a large majority during last plenary session".

Sophie in 't Veld receives EPIC International Champion of Freedom Award

Dutch MEP Sophie in 't Veld (D66/ALDE) has been honoured today at  the annual Conference on Computers, Privacy and Data Protection in Brussels.

Dubbed "Liberal Crusader'' by a newspaper, the social-liberal MEP has taken the lead on many privacy issues, like PNR and SWIFT and she has worked very hard as a politician to safeguard civil liberties.
