ELDR launched membership for individuals: let your liberal voice be heard!

The ELDR Party has taken a significant step forward towards citizens’ participation at EU level by launching associate membership of the ELDR Party for individuals.

“Direct participation is all about nourishing the quality of future democracy. And with this initiative ELDR would like to add flesh to the bones to what was introduced in 1992 by the Maastricht Treaty: the European citizenship” commented Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck, President of the ELDR Party.

Passenger data (PNR) - Commission proposes system for retaining passenger data based on spurious security grounds

The European Commission today presented a legislative proposal aimed at setting up an EU system for the use and retention of passenger data (PNR). The Greens have criticised the proposal, which would allow for the gathering and storing of potentially sensitive information. EU raw materials strategy - Commission proposal undermined by lack of focus and poorly-defined measures

The European Commission today presented its long-postponed raw materials strategy after months of delay. The Greens are expressing concern that, instead of setting out a coherent and focused strategy, the Commission's approach is too broad and not well defined. Commenting on the strategy, Green MEP Reinhard Bütikofer, the EP draftsperson on the strategy, said:

In a joint statement today, Joseph Daul MEP, EPP Group Chairman and Ioannis Kasoulides MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group responsible for external relations, welcome the Declaration on Egypt, adopted by the EU's Foreign Affairs Ministers on Monday.

"The European Union must continue to insist that the fundamental civic rights of the Egyptian people must be respected. They must be granted the right to peaceful assembly and association and to the freedom of expression. Their right to determine their own destiny has to be respected", said the two EPP Group leaders.

European Parliament's foreign affairs committee criticises human rights situation in Iran and demands tougher sanctions

The European Parliament's foreign affairs committee today called for tougher sanctions against representatives of the Iranian government. The EU Council of Ministers needed to assess the possibility to introduce more targeted sanctions against individual members and officials of the Iranian government who are responsible for human rights violations, MEPs demanded today.

Pension Reform: serious issue to be tackled

The European Parliament's Employment Committee gave their response to the European Commission's strategy on pensions today.  ALDE highlights the fact that Member States economies are interdependent and that the future sustainability of pension systems should be taken into account in the framework of macro economic surveillance, nonetheless it is very clear that Member States retain full responsibility for the organisational set-up of their own pension systems.

Consumer rights rules - EP vote would risk lowest common denominator approach to consumer rights in the EU

The European Parliament’s consumer affairs (IMCO) committee voted this evening on a proposal on new EU consumer rights rules (Schwab report on the Consumer Rights Directive). The Greens expressed disappointment with the outcome, which could risk diminishing consumer rights throughout the EU.
