Mixed market outlook in 2011; call for unified policy approach to ensure technology leadership in Europe

Brussels, 2 February 2011 - The automotive market situation is expected to remain mixed in 2011, with strong demand in the so-called BRIC countries while the economic situation in Europe is likely to keep dampening new passenger car sales in this region. Commercial vehicle sales in Europe may record a relatively strong growth, however against the backdrop of the low market levels of the recent crisis.

The place of renewable energy in the European internal electricity market

EFET* welcomes this week’s Communication of the European Commission on the progress of renewable energy in the EU**. It is good to see expressions of optimism about the achievability of an important strand of the EU 20-20-20 energy and environment goals. We have noted the Commission’s attempt to explain how cooperation mechanisms between Member States should be possible in the future.

On the situation in Tunisia and Egypt

"European authorities seem to have learned from Tunisia and were quicker to condemn violence in Egypt" said Marie Christine Vergiat MEP (France). "Let us beware of interference and be firm on all violations of human rights. The EU has lost a lot of credibility in many countries in the region. It must be humble while being attentive to the needs of real people.

Energy Summit - old thinking slays prospects for change

GUE/NGL MEPs criticised the EU's energy strategy priorities ahead of the European Council meeting this Friday, which will focus on energy and innovation.

 

"Energy is clearly vital for creating new jobs but governments continue to insist on outdated energy policies" Portuguese MEP Marisa Matias objected. "We need an energy revolution, not more public-private partnerships. Attachment to "old energy" and a lack of ambition in terms of "new energy" means this is unfortunately a Council of continuity, when it could be a first step toward real change."

 

Hope and apprehension about Southern Sudan

ALDE welcomes the outcome of the self-determination referendum in January in Southern Sudan  today, during a debate in the European Parliament.  Nonetheless, ALDE urges the EU to stay vigilant concerning the viability and safety of this new state.

"What will the public remember from the European Council this Friday in Brussels? That Europe speaks with one voice on Egypt, the Euro, and energy or that it spends its time on less important issues?", asked Joseph Daul MEP. "For the EPP Group, the solution to all these problems is not less, but more Europe."

On Egypt, the Chairman of the main European parliamentary Group said that he hopes Europe speaks loudly and clearly and that it plays its role in the region by "assisting the transition and establishing democratic and open elections."

Waiting for recognition - the forgotten Roma genocide

"Only when the EU and its member states finally recognize the Roma genocide as a crime against humanity will the majority rethink its attitude. We also need binding measures for the fight against Anti-Romanyism in the member states and the prosecution of acts of violence and hate campaigns against Roma and Sinti" GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst said in today's debate on EU recognition of the Roma genocide during World War II.

The Assembly of European Regions (AER), through its Working Group on European funding, today presented a survey of its members to which 23 regions of 14 countries responded. The study aims to better understand and provide concrete answers to the challenges facing regions in the funding and management of EU funds. This topic is highly topical as planning for the post-2014 period has already begun.
