European Council President agrees to submit to MEPs questions

Andrew Duff  (LibDem, UK) has welcomed today the decision of Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, to answer written questions from MEPs.

Mr Duff had tabled a written question to Mr Van Rompuy in December 2009 at the time of the entry into force of the Lisbon treaty. At that stage, the procedure was blocked by the Council presidency.

Yesterday, however, Mr Van Rompuy wrote to the President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, stating his agreement, after all, to answer tabled parliamentary questions about his 'own political activities'.

Right-Wing European Council set to “fuel debate and debate only fuel” - Formal energy and informal economic agenda criticised for lack of forward thinking

The first European Council on Energy is set to pass by without any forward thinking expectations being met. Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists (PES), declared: “due to the Conservative majority, this Council looks like it will miss a precious opportunity to define a new EU energy strategy. Old leaders, with old ideas, are simply proposing old energy methods for Europe’s future. What is certain is that this Council will fuel debate and debate only fuel”.

An unacceptable denial of democracy

Statement by GUE/NGL MEPs Patrick Le Hyaric and Cornelia Ernst

Parliament clears way for pan-European supervisory bodies

"The Parliament has successfully insisted on guarantees from Commission and Council to ensure the independence and resources of the new European Supervisory Authority bodies (ESAs). The confirmation from the Commission and the Presidency on behalf of the Council last night has met our concerns and thus enabled Parliament today to approve, by a vote in the plenary, the three nominees of the supervisory bodies." said Sylvie Goulard (Modem, France), ALDE coordinator on the economic and monetary affairs committee (ECON).

Europe´s growing pile of e-waste

Household appliances, such as computers, mobile phones, fridges, microwaves, irons and other consumer gadgets, constitute one of the fastest growing electric and electronic waste streams in the European Union. This type of waste poses a series of challenges such as health problems if the waste is not properly treated and a waste of raw materials if there is no recycling.

EU financial authority chairs - Inauspicious start for EU financial supervision authorities as EP confirms chair candidates

The European Parliament today endorsed (1) the three candidates to chair the new EU financial supervision authorities (2) after resolutions on their rejection were not adopted. The Greens expressed concern with the selection process, as well as with the suitability of one of the candidates. Speaking after the vote, Green MEP Sven Giegold, who was the EP draftsman for the European Securities and Markets Authority, said:

Electronic waste (WEEE) EP votes to tighten EU rules on waste electric and electronic goods

The European Parliament today voted to revise EU legislation on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The Greens welcomed the vote, which will tighten up the requirements and should close some of the loopholes that have led to problems with the implementation of the rules. After the vote, Green MEP Michail Tremopoulos said:

The EP plenary vote on the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) Directive: SOME PROGRESS BUT AN OPPORTUNITY MISSED

In reaction to today’s European Parliament plenary vote, CECED notes some progress to improve the Directive. MEPs have however missed one central issue: the need for the revised legislation to cover all WEEE, and not only the WEEE that producers take care of. Today approximately 2/3 of the WEEE is not handled by producers and falls outside the treatment requirements of the Directive.
