Russia must respect her international obligations or face sanctions

Following on the initiative by ALDE, a debate on the rule of law in Russia was held this week in the European Parliament.

Guy Verhofsadt, ALDE President, "We have been put under pressure from Russia not to have this debate, it is not for Russia to decide the agenda of the European Parliament, it is for our democratically elected members.

On the subject of rule of Law in Russia, Kristiina Ojuland, (Eesti Reformierakond, Estonia), Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee told Parliament that Russian authorities are blatantly enforcing "unconstitutional law and order".

Changes by Hungarian Parliament to media law must be closely monitored

Today's meeting of the European Parliament's group leaders (with exception of EPP) backed a proposal to postpone the vote to the next part session, but not withdraw a resolution, concerning the Hungarian media law in order firstly to take account of the announcement yesterday in Strasbourg by European Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, that Hungary has agreed to modify its controversial media law in line with her four principal criticisms* and secondly to keep the pressure on the Hungarian authorities to implement the necessary modifications.

CIAA welcomes Parliament consent on EU-South Korea FTA

(Brussels, 17 February 2011) The CIAA (Confederation of the food and drink industries of the EU) today welcomes the consent by the European Parliament to the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

MEPs furious at Commission over shady expert groups

GUE/NGL MEPs to join anti-Nazi protest this weekend in Dresden

Speaking ahead of a counter-protest against Europe's biggest neo-Nazi rally this Saturday in Dresden, GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky said his group strongly supports the counter-protest and called on the people of Dresden to take part.

 

"This weekend we will show our opposition to historical revisionism and far-right ideology," he said, and "we are especially happy to welcome international guests to support the blockade of the annual march" where Neo-Nazis will publicly deny Germany's liability for World War II and the holocaust.
