Equal pay day - Belated Commission launch undermines a positive initiative

The European Commission today announced the launch of the first ever European Equal Pay Day, to take place on 5 March. The Greens support the initiative but have called on the Commission to do much more. MEPs are organising a cross-political action in the EP to use the new European Parliament right of initiative to this end, with a press launch on Women's Day next week (Tuesday, 8 March)*. Responding to the Commission announcement, Green MEP and member of the EP women's rights committee Franziska Brantner said:

"Croatia deserves to have its efforts rewarded by the conclusion of accession negotiations in June and is well on its way to becoming the EU's 28th Member State". "The EPP Group backs the call made by six EU Mediterranean Member States to create a solidarity fund to help mitigate migration effects as the dramatic events continue to unfold on our doorstep in North Africa," declared Vito Bonsignore MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group.

Mr Bonsignore was addressing the 7th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, in Rome.

CHP industry could fill a third of Europe’s 2020 primary energy savings gap

On the eve of the publication of the European Energy Efficiency Plan and as the European Commission hunts for effective energy efficiency measures to plug the hole in its 2020 energy savings target, the CHP industry claims that it is sitting on one third of the solution. Highlighting the 35 Mtoe of CHP primary energy savings which Member States themselves have identified, COGEN Europe claims that CHP across renewable and fossil fuels should be a foundation principal of Europe’s approach to energy and calls for a strengthened policy frame work around CHP.

Strengthening the involvement of SMEs in European Standardization - SMEST2 project has started

Given the continuing and growing importance of SMEs in European Standardization, CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) and the National Standards Bodies of Austria (ASI), Germany (DIN) and the Netherlands (NEN) and NORMAPME (European Office of Craft/Trades and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises for Standardisation) jointly started the SME Standardization Toolkit (SMEST2) project.

CAP 2020 must promote the interests of farmers and consumers

GUE/NGL's "CAP 2020" public hearing held in Brussels on 2/2/2011 heard from farmers, rural policy experts, cattle-breeders' unions, farmers' and environmental organisations. The European Coordination of Via Campesina presented its position on the need for a fourth option, different from the three proposed for the CAP reform post-2013 by the European Commission. For its part, Friends of the Earth presented its position on food sovereignty.

 

Towards a doubling of public transport market shares: Finalists of the first International PTx2 Awards announced

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) has announced the finalists of the first International PTx2 Awards. The finalists have been selected from amongst the 155 applicants from 43 countries from all continents that have taken up the challenge of doubling the public transport market share worldwide by 2025. The Awards Ceremony will take place during the 59th UITP World Congress & Exhibition, hosted by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) from 10 to 14 April 2011 in Dubai.

Ahead of the review by the European Parliament of the Commission's proposal aiming to define the conditions for authorising or restricting the culture of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the European Union, the EPP Group organised a public Hearing on the topic on Wednesday 2 March in the presence of the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, John Dalli, numerous MEPs, experts, representatives of farmers and representatives of civil society. The Hearing was chaired by Catherine Soullie MEP, EPP Group Spokeswoman on the dossier.
