The third edition of the S&D Latin America Days, organised in cooperation with the Party of European Socialists (PES) and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), takes place in Brussels on 15-16 October.
This event brings together S&D members and progressive partners from Latin America to strengthen our partnerships and advance a progressive EU-Latin America agenda. This year, we are honoured to welcome the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, Mario Lubetkin, along with other progressive leaders from the Latin American and Caribbean region, and from Spain and Germany.
The EU and Latin America and the Caribbean are strategic partners of choice, united by history, culture, and progressive values. At the S&D Latin America Days 2025, we reaffirm our common principles and progressive vision for an inclusive and effective multilateral order. Discussions will also focus on our contribution to the preparation of the EU–CELAC Summit in Colombia (November 2025) and the EuroLat Assembly in Brussels (December 2025).
Iratxe García Pérez, S&D Group President, said:
“The presence of progressive leaders from across the region reflects our collective determination to build a fairer and more sustainable world, one where international cooperation prevails over confrontation, and solidarity over indifference.
“Moreover, it's a great honour to welcome the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, Mario Lubetkin, our special guest at this third edition of the high-level meeting on Latin America. Uruguay remains a source of inspiration for all progressives: one that puts people, democracy, and the planet at the centre of our political action.
“As we move towards the EU-CELAC Summit and the ratification of the agreements with Mercosur and Mexico, we must ensure these partnerships serve our peoples, advancing decent work, climate justice, and the green and digital transitions that leave no one behind.
“In a time of global uncertainty, our Progressive EU-Latin America Agenda must continue to stand as a beacon of hope – defending democracy, human rights, and the principles of international law, while building stronger, fairer, and more resilient societies on both sides of the Atlantic.”
Leire Pajín Iraola, S&D EUROLAT coordinator, said:
“Ahead of the EU-CELAC Summit in Colombia, we, progressive voices from the EU and from Latin America and the Caribbean, come together with a clear purpose: to renew and strengthen our alliance and those of our regions, putting people and the planet first. In the coming days, we will work side by side to advance a progressive EU-Latin America agenda – one that is built on all we have achieved together. Yet regressive forces want to dismantle democracy and wellbeing based on fairness, and to undermine respect for human rights, humanitarian law, the environment, and our shared prosperity.
“Together, we want to tackle poverty and inequality, to make sure that growth truly benefits everyone. Through cooperation and initiatives like the EU Global Gateway, we need to bring investment that creates better jobs, access to education, health and care systems, and supports green energy and digital opportunities to improve the daily life in our communities. We are here to foster real action, for a more just, democratic, and sustainable world – one that delivers dignity for all.”
