Renewed Kyoto protocol needed from Doha climate talks
"While no substantial outcomes have emerged from recent climate summits, small island states and developing countries continue to face major threats", GUE/NGL MEP Sabine Wils said calling for "a renewed Kyoto protocol" in today's European Parliament debate on the upcoming Doha climate talks.
"Hundreds of billions of dollars are needed for climate adaptation and it is clear that the industrialised countries should pay but until the emerging and industrialised economies agree, there will be no positive results from Doha" Wils said addressing Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard.
She concluded by saying Europe must improve its greenhouse gas reduction goal for 2020 to 40% in relation to 1990 levels and set binding targets for renewables use of 45% by 2030.
The 18th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC - COP 18 - will take place from Monday, 26 November to Friday, 7 December 2012 in Doha, Qatar.
The European Parliament votes on a resolution on the negotiations tomorrow (Thursday).
