On 28 January, the Chairmanship of the European Banking Industry Committee (EBIC)1, which rotates on a yearly basis, was handed over to Gerhard Hofmann, a Vice-President of the European Association of Co-operative Banks (EACB) and a Board member of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken (BVR). The overall secretariat of EBIC, which rotates along with the chairmanship, will be in the hands of the European Banking Federation as of the same date.

Founded in 2004, EBIC is committed to providing the common voice of the EU banking sector at large regarding EU financial legislation initiatives and banking practices and to maintaining an open and fruitful dialogue with the EU institutions and international bodies. EBIC is an advisory committee which is regularly called upon to provide expertise in the field of financial services.

The Committee is currently focusing on initiatives in the areas of prudential regulation, banking supervision, compliance related to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter Terrorism Financing (CFT), as well as a number of topics in the retail banking area. In the recent past, EBIC produced several key positions for the banking industry. These positions can be viewed on http://www.eubic.org.
