The European Parliament's Women's Rights Committee today gained equal footing with the Legal Affairs and Civil Liberties Committees for work on a Directive on protection for victims of crime; and the civil protection instrument of the European Protection Order.

The decision was taken today by Parliament's political group presidents. The two proposed pieces of legislation come under the "victims' package".

"I am very pleased that the Conference of Presidents has given this opportunity to our Committee to work on equal footing on such important legislation which will set minimum standards for victims - many of whom are women - throughout the European Union" said Swedish GUE/NGL MEP and Chair of the Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee, Mikael Gustafsson. "I now look forward to our continued good cooperation".
