Aiming to identify key areas for political pressure on the right to self-determination of the Saharaui people, and the human rights situation in Western Sahara, the GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament will today welcome Saharaui human rights activists, including Aminetu Haidar, to the group's study days in Madrid.
The special debate on EU-Morocco relations and Saharaui rights will begin at 11am and following the debate a delegation of GUE/NGL MEPs and activists will go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to deliver a letter on the issue of Western Sahara to Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Miguel Angel Moratinos.
Aminetu Haidar is a Saharaui human rights defender and political activist for the independence of Western Sahara from Morocco. Since the withdrawal of former colony Spain in 1975 Western Sahara has been illegally occupied by Morocco despite several UN resolutions.
