ALDE Group leader, Guy Vefhofstadt, met yesterday evening in Strasbourg with Mihai Ghimpu, President of the Liberal Party of Moldova.

Verhofstadt congratulated the new coalition government of Moldova and encouraged decisive reform efforts – most urgently in the fight against corruption, reform of the judiciary, restoring trust in the banking sector and delivering on reforms requested by the IMF. He also expressed concern and condemned violence used by parts of the opposition during anti-government demonstrations:

“It is important that EU diplomacy and in particular, High Representative Mogherini,  becomes more active, both in supporting the new government and making clear to all forces in Moldova that violence is not acceptable.”

Both leaders also agreed on the importance of continuous support of the EU for Moldova in the context of the Eastern Partnership.

"As a parliamentary Rapporteur on this issue, I will be visiting Moldova on Feb 8-10 and am looking forward for constructive talks on the reforms needed for the country and its association agenda. "Yes" to transparency and "no" to corruption – these are the key words at the moment, I have no doubts.”
