Statement from GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer on France, Portugal and Spain's refusal to allow the President of Bolivia, Evo Morales Ayma, to enter their airspace

On Tuesday 2 July, France, Portugal and Spain did not allow the President of Bolivia's presidential plane, returning from Moscow, to enter their airspace or to land for technical reasons, putting the lives of the President and his team at risk. The plane was forced to land in Vienna, Austria.

The President of Bolivia is being illegally retained in Vienna, and Spain is being pressurised to allow the presidential plane to land for a technical stop on the condition that the President allows the plane to be searched - a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention that guarantees immunity for presidential flights.

Gabi Zimmer strongly condemns this violation of international law against a sovereign country, and deplores that the three countries mentioned have shown themselves to be subservient to the American secret services. European countries should refuse to act as North American colonies.

The GUE/NGL Group calls on all EU member states to fully respect the Vienna Convention, and to immediately allow the Bolivian presidential plane to enter their airspace and to land for technical reasons with no conditions attached.

Furthermore, in light of the important contribution Edward Snowden's actions have made to safeguarding privacy and civil liberties worldwide, the GUE/NGL considers that all the countries where an asylum request was made should grant it. To this end the GUE/NGL tabled an amendment to the so called "PRISM" resolution, which is to be voted on tomorrow by the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
