Brussels, 3 September 2019- The European Solvents Industry Group, ESIG, a sector group of Cefic, is pleased to announce that the winner of the Solvents Award 2019 is Packwise GmbH for its “Smart IBC industrial containers”. Its project showcases innovation in the field of digitalisation.

Over the summer, the jury made up of representatives from European institutions, trade press and associations chose Packwise
as the winner among the five shortlisted candidates. The four other finalists are Anno Chemicals “Save the World - Save a Solvent”, Azelis “Happy Care”, Brenntag “ConnectingChemistry” and Honeywell Aerospace Toulouse “improvement of varnish removal process”.

Packwise is a start-up that innovates in the field of distribution and digitalisation. Its smart IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) can be managed into automated circuits to gain better control and insight into the supply chain. A digital twin of the container is created, which gives increased control over the container and creates new insights into the supply chain. The Packwise industrial internet of things (IIoT) device that includes track, trace & sense functionalities, enables identification, localisation, filling level detection, temperature as well as shock control. With its innovative project, Packwise’s solution improves time and cost efficiency, ensures that solvents are transported safely, helps save resources and creates a new approach to customer relationship management. This initiative contributes also to reaching the UN Sustainable Development Goal 9: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”, which indicates that there is a need for “more investments in high-tech products that dominate the manufacturing productions to increase efficiency”.

Cornelia Tietz, ESIG Secretary General, said: “By relaunching the Solvents Award this year, our goal was to promote innovative and responsible best practice initiatives. I am delighted to see that the winner demonstrates how small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) innovate to make sure solvents are handled and transported in a safe, sustainable and forward-looking manner.”
