Smart Move campaign, promoting a greater use of buses and coaches worldwide, is now accessible to the Russian-speaking public.

Moscow – The International Road Transport Union (IRU) and Busworld are pleased to announce the launch of the Smart Move website in Russian.

Smart Move is a joint industry campaign launched in October 2009 by the IRU and Busworld to promote a greater use of collective passenger transport by bus and coach worldwide.

Vladimir Florea, President of the IRU CIS Liaison Committee, said: “Smart Move’s vision is that buses and coaches should be recognised by policy makers as the ultimate collective transport mode to achieve sustainable mobility for all: the services they provide are safe, green, user-friendly, efficient and affordable. By making this initiative available to the Russian speaking world, we will go even further in realising our economic, social and environmental objectives.”

The objective of Smart Move is to create a favourable political, legislative and market framework in order to double the use of buses and coaches within the next 10-15 years through informed policy-making and appropriate incentives.

In Europe alone, such an increase would result in a reduction in CO2 emissions by at least 50 million tonnes per year; a reduction in road fatalities by over 3000 per year; a spectacular fall of congestion in cities at zero cost for taxpayers due to an expected 10-15% reduction in car traffic, and the creation of 4 million new jobs.

Used effectively, buses and coaches are the best solution to a range of current and future mobility challenges, such as climate change, congestion, road safety, connectivity and social inclusion. They are the only transport mode which can successfully compete with the private car in offering a sustainable alternative while maintaining a high level of flexibility.

Busworld Russia, which will be held in Nizhniy Novgorod from 30 June to 2 July 2010, will showcase the latest vehicles and technologies that will further improve the safety, environmental friendliness, efficiency, and user-friendliness of bus and coach transport services.
