The situation in Venezuela was debated yesterday by the plenary of the European Parliament with the high representative for EU foreign policy Federica Mogherini. The S&D Group expressed its concern about the institutional, economic and social crisis in the American country.

S&D MEP Ramón Jáuregui, who is co-chair of the EU-Latin America parliamentary assembly (Eurolat) said:

"Venezuela is going through a very complex period and we in Europe are worried. We have strong bonds with the country and we want to contribute to improving the situation. Therefore it is important to respect the constitution. On one hand the democratic legitimacy of the assembly must be recognised, and it should be able to legislate fully and with the respect of the other state institutions.

"However, the seriousness of the economic crisis, of risks to public safety, of supplies for the population and of the functioning of public services means a positive and constructive cohabitation is essential in the exercise of their respective functions. We in Europe can only call for dialogue and for an agreement to be reached to find solutions for the serious problems affecting the Venezuelan people."

S&D MEP Francisco Assis, who chairs the European Parliament's delegation for relations with Mercosur countries, said:

"The volatile situation in Venezuela is worsening every day and the current state of the institutional dispute between the president and the members of parliament only increases the difficulty of finding ways to resolve this standoff.  It is important that we urge both sides to reach an agreement that would allow the country to focus on finding a solution for the current economic and social crisis.

"The mounting prices, shortage of basic goods and collapse of the economy have a far worse effect on the population than any political struggle or ideological difference between the opposing sides of Venezuela's political spectrum. Therefore it is paramount that a solution is found quickly and a way forward can be implemented to alleviate some of the problems that the people of Venezuela are facing."
