S&Ds call on member states to respect Parliament’s progressive trade priorities for Chile

The European Parliament today adopted an S&D report on modernising the trade pillar of the EU-Chile association agreement concluded in 2002. The Socialists and Democrats managed to include all their priorities for a progressive trade policy in the report adopted today. The report is particularly strong on the gender dimension of trade, transparency and making sure the benefits of trade are widely shared. With this report the Parliament outlines its position before the Council adopts its negotiation mandate.
S&D spokesperson on trade Alessia Mosca MEP said:
“Since its conclusion in 2002, the trade pillar of the association agreement with Chile has worked fairly well. However, after 15 years it is outdated. With today’s resolution we have sent a clear message to both the Council and the Commission: the European Parliament stands for an open, inclusive and ruled-based trade model. By modernising the association agreement we now have the chance to strengthen our partnership and commit to common environmental and social objectives and promoting multilateralism. We call on the EU member states to respect the priorities set out by the Parliament when adopting a negotiation mandate.”
European Parliament rapporteur, S&D MEP Inmaculada Rodríguez-Piñero Fernández, added:
“We have succeeded in including our key priorities in the resolution adopted today, like a binding sustainable-development chapter with the possibility of sanctions, a chapter on small and medium-sized enterprises and, for the first time, a chapter on gender equality. We have defended a fair investment deal to take into consideration investors' obligations and put an end to the private arbitration systems (ISDS), which is still in force between Chile and 17 EU member states. We call on Chile and the EU to promote a public and permanent multilateral investment court to replace ISDS worldwide."
