Four Liberal and Democrat MEPs (ALDE) are pressing the European Commission to support the listing of Atlantic bluefin tuna in CITES annex I at the next meeting of the Conference of the Parties in March next year.

Citing scientific evidence of depleting fish stocks and the worrying scale of illegal catches, the MEPs believe current conservation plans by the European Commission will not be sufficient to save the species.

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy (D66, NL), Corinne Lepage (Modem, FR) and Chris Davies and Graham Watson (Lib Dem, UK) call for a strong intervention from the Commission as part of a broader fundamental review of the Common Fisheries Policy.

See attached letter addressed to the Commission President and commissioners for fisheries and environment.
