Photo/video opportunity ahead of PNR vote
The European United Left/Nordic Green Left is holding a protest against the PNR agreement, this morning, April 19, at 11.45 am, in front of the hemicycle.
In the vote the group will request that the draft EU-US agreement be sent to the Court of Justice for an opinion on its compatibility with EU data protection legislation.
GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst: "The EU-US PNR agreement obliges air carriers to transfer to US authorities all passengers’ data from flights between the EU and the US without any actual need. This is therefore up to US authorities to decide who will actually board the plane. European citizens get nothing in return - not even the right to appeal. Just recently the US introduced the same obligation for flights from Heathrow to Canada, Mexico and Cuba - and still decide who boards the plane. We are fully against this deal and will show our opposition in front of the plenary hall in Strasbourg before the vote."
This is a joint action by the GUE/NGL and Greens/EFA groups and MEPS from other groups will also be participating.
