Polish Presidency: an example to be followed. Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group

Date

14 Dec 2011

"As Minister Radek Sikorski said in Berlin, Europe is in the uncomfortable position of teetering at the edge of a precipice. Either we take action, or we fall. The Polish Presidency has helped us to act together efficiently while respecting everyone's opinions" - Joseph Daul in the debate on the results of the Polish Presidency with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

"On the 6th of July, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told this Parliament of his intention to re-inject some enthusiasm in Europe. He delivered his vision of a Europe which is proud of its values, of its successes, an inclusive Europe, a Europe confident of its capacity to influence the world. I share this vision, as does my Group, and we want to put it into practice", said Joseph Daul.

"The current crisis is an opportunity for Europeans to be enthusiastic once again, as long as they can learn lessons and can change what has to be changed. The Polish Presidency has helped us to do this."

The Chairman of the EPP Group gave three examples of the Polish Presidency's successes: economic governance, relations with our Eastern and Southern neighbours, and the progress made with the European patent.

"Other than legislative texts, the Polish Presidency has supported a principle which is dear to my parliamentary Group and to the overwhelming majority of this Parliament, the Community method. Because your country, like all the Central and Eastern European countries, knows better than any the price of freedom and the importance of solidarity; you have preferred respect for everyone's opinions and efficiency, without seeking to impose your views. This is an example which many Member States could follow."
