The Supreme Court in the UK ruled today that the UK Government's suspension of Parliament was unlawful and that the decision is now void and without effect. The S&D Group welcomes the fact that Parliament can get back to work to ensure that a no-deal is ruled out and discuss all options to find a solution for Brexit.
S&D MEP Pedro Silva Pereira, interim member of the European Parliament Brexit Steering Group said:
"The Supreme Court's decision today means that the UK Parliament can get back to work. Our Group's top priority is to avoid a disastrous no-deal Brexit. We are glad that Parliament is again fully operational to ensure that a no-deal is avoided. We urge the UK Government not only to respect the rule of law, but also to allow for as much open, democratic debate and scrutiny in Parliament as is needed to find a solution for Brexit. Shutting down Parliament is never good news for democracy and the rule of law."
