A free Lifestyle Test designed to help people reduce their environmental impact, and lead more sustainable and healthier lives, has launched in Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey as part of the EU-funded project PSLifestyle with support from ICLEI Europe. Available in local languages, the web app encourages users to adopt tailored lifestyle advice, based on assessments of individuals’ daily impact. To move Europe towards climate neutrality, individual lifestyle choices that minimise climate impact must be encouraged and made accessible to all.

"We can all find our own way to live a positive and sustainable life. We are really excited to introduce a new Lifestyle Test that has been developed together with residents of eight European countries. Mitigating climate change is such a huge global challenge and everyone’s contribution is needed," says Markus Terho, Project Lead of PSLifestyle and Project Director at Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra.

The app prompts users to take a test to determine their lifestyle’s impact on the climate. Based on the results, individuals receive tailored suggestions to adapt their lifestyle. Users can then build a plan that will help them see the impact of their daily actions. Individuals’ answers and choices will also feed into an anonymous data pool to help researchers and policymakers drive change across society.

The Lifestyle Test was co-created with residents in a series of Living Lab workshops hosted in the eight European countries. Through the Living Labs, individuals were able to help design the test by identifying areas for further improvement, including its functions and design as well as country-specific lifestyle suggestions. The Living Labs took place in ICLEI Member cities Tampere, Turku, and Lappeenranta (Finland); Athens (Greece); Lisbon (Portugal); Ljubljana (Slovenia); and Izmir (Turkey). Other cities included Tallinn (Estonia); Wuppertal (Germany); and Parma and the Tuscany Region (Italy).

In 2024, the PSLifestyle project and ICLEI Europe will design co-creation workshops for public authorities and policymakers in the eight countries that aim to collect local insights on how to best deploy the Lifestyle Test throughout the EU, in addition to identifying customisation needs.
