(23 January 2018) The Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute (EUI) has a new European Governance and Politics Programme (EGPP), aiming to foster high quality research on the EU and European integration, as well as create a platform for researchers to share theoretical perspectives and data sets to support their research on the EU.

The Programme builds on the European Union Democracy Observatory (EUDO), which positioned the Robert Schuman Centre and the European University Institute at the forefront of research on the EU between 2006 and 2016, and it has the ambition to become an international hub of high quality research on the EU.

“The European Union is experiencing considerable turbulence, pressures and instability”, said Professor Brigid Laffan, Director of the Robert Schuman Centre and the master mind behind this new Programme. “Over the past years the European project has become much more politicised and contested than before; there is a need to return to the ‘big’ questions of European integration and focus on the nature of the new order/disorder that is emerging in the EU as well as globally”.

The EUI is the only pan-European institute carrying out research in the social sciences at the doctoral and post-doctoral level, involving researchers from all over Europe and beyond. Across its departments there is a very strong scholarly community working on the EU, therefore it is the ideal place for a Programme aiming to contribute a better understanding of the multiple challenges facing the Union.

The new Programme will be officially launched on 8 and 9 March 2018 in Florence with a major conference on ‘2017: Europe’s Bumper Year of Elections’. More information on this and the possibility to register will soon be available on our website.
