GUE/NGL to maintain political pressure for Mumia Abu-Jamal

In support of journalist and author Mumia Abu-Jamal who has been on death row for almost thirty years, the GUE/NGL group today welcomed Abu-Jamal's lawyer Robert Bryan to the European Parliament to discuss awareness-raising and anti death penalty activities.

MEPs Sabine Lösing (Germany) and Søren Søndergaard (Denmark) appealed for signatures for the petition to Barak Obama requesting that he work towards ending the death penalty in the US and throughout the world, and remove Mumia Abu Jamal from death row.

"Several irregularities in this case show that international standards ensuring the fairness of legal proceedings were not met" the MEPs said. "It is crucial that political and public awareness is raised in support of Mumia Abu-Jamal and the 20,000 men women and children on death row throughout the world. We will continue to raise this issue in the European Parliament and in our countries and urge people to sign the petition".
