The European Parliament has endorsed the compromise deal reached with the Council concerning the draft Waste Directive. “Throughout the process Orgalime has been sensitive about the proposal that member states might be able, at a national level, to take measures to encourage the design of products with respect to waste: this just risked undermining the coherent approach adopted in the Eco Design of Energy Using Products Directive which cover all environmental aspects including energy use and not just waste. The compromise deal adopted now underlines that the implementation of such new requirements in the Waste Directive must not undermine the functioning of the internal market, nor should regulators ignore specific waste stream or product related legislation: this for us is a must”, reacted Adrian Harris, Secretary General of Orgalime, the European Engineering Industries Association. “What is the point of establishing a harmonised and coherent framework to deal with all environmental aspects in the design of our products, that move freely from member state to member state, if you then go on to undermine it with other legislation?” he added.
