Mark Millar steps into new post at global accountants’ body

The chief executive of St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich is taking on a leading role at a professional body which represents more than 200,000 accountants from all over the world.

Mark Millar was named the new deputy president of ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in London on the 21 November.

Mr Millar will continue with his work at the hospice which has cared for terminally ill people from Suffolk, as well as their families, since 1988.

Mr Millar said: ‘I feel hugely honoured to be representing ACCA professionals from all over the world in this responsible role. It is an enormous privilege to serve ACCA, which does such amazing work in promoting the accountancy profession, protecting the public interest, and supporting 219,000 members and 527,000 students across 179 countries.

‘The role also allows me to carry on with my work at St Elizabeth, which is endlessly rewarding. The staff at the hospice provide such an incredible service for the people of the county, and it is a privilege to work with them.’

When he was 18, Mr Millar rejected a university place to join the NHS and study for the ACCA Qualification. He qualified in 1980, and since then he has held a variety of finance roles in the NHS. He is also a non-executive director of Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Millar was elected to ACCA’s Council in 2010 and served as vice president last year. In 2019/20 he will serve alongside ACCA’s new president, Jenny Gu from China, and his successor as vice president, Orla Collins from the Republic of Ireland.
