On behalf of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left European Parliamentary Group, GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky today expressed "our most sincere admiration for the courage and dignity of President Correa during the attempted coup d'état".

"What occurred yesterday was an attempt to break with the constitutional legality and the legitimate  institutions democratically elected by the people of Ecuador," continued Bisky.

"We are sure that the loyalty of the Ecuadorian people and its army will pave the way to the social reforms that your people decided democratically," said Willy Meyer, GUE/NGL MEP, Vice-Chair of EUROLAT.

"Your determination and dignity in the defence of the people is a real example not only for your country but for the rest of the world," stated Bisky.

"We would like to reiterate our solidarity with your government and the with the efforts that you are making in your country," Willy Meyer concluded.
