On behalf of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left, Group President Lothar Bisky expresses his condolences to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias, and the Cypriot people on the tragic and catastrophic blast that has taken place at the camp of the National Guard during which a number of people have lost their lives and the country's electric power supply has been severely damaged.

As soon as the consequences of this major disaster have been evaluated, the GUE/NGL Group calls on the European Union and its member states to support Cyprus using all means available, including to mobilise the Union's Solidarity Fund, given that the population of Cyprus has been put on high emergency. The European United Left/Nordic Green Left Group will back any actions of the European Union to this end.
