EPP WELCOMES CZECH SENATE’S SUPPORT TO LISBON TREATY

EPP President, Wilfried Martens, today welcomed the decision of the Czech Senate to ratify the Lisbon Treaty.

“This is a crucial step towards concluding the ratification process and implementing the Lisbon Treaty, which will help to strengthen the EU institutions,” Martens pointed out.

“After the enlargement of the EU we need more flexibility in the decision-making process to be able to react quickly to the challenges that we have ahead, mainly the economic and financial crisis. The Lisbon Treaty will also help the EU to have a unified foreign policy and, consequently, to play a more decisive role in a globalised world,” he stated.

“I would like to congratulate the Czech government and the Czech citizens for their commitment to the European project. The EPP shares this approach and will continue to support the ratification process, as we have always done,” Martens concluded.
