In this project Enel invested more than 700 million euros of which 160 million euros went for environmental improvements, including: construction of two FGDs (flue gas
desulfurization systems) serving all four rehabilitated and modernized units of Enel Maritza East 3 TPP and reducing by over 94% the SO2 emissions from the plant’s
operation; introduction of a comprehensive water management system resulting in over 50% reduction of the fresh water consumption; building of the only two waste water purification installations in the region of Stara Zagora; and introduction of a new system capturing over 99.8% of the dust from the boiler process.
